Hivos is managed by the Executive Board, consisting of Executive Director Edwin Huizing and the Chief Operations Officer Michel Farkas. The Management Team is made up of the Directors of the thematic Open Society and Green Society programs, the five Directors of our regional hubs and a few other management positions.
The Directors of the two thematic programs are Carol Gribnau (Green Society) and Will Janssen (Open Society).
The five Directors of our regional hubs are Mendi Njonjo (East Africa), Tanja Lubbers (Southern Africa), Biranchi Upadhyaya (Southeast Asia), Myrtille Danse (Latin America) and Sarah Saleh (Middle East & North Africa)
Additional management positions at the global office in The Hague are Mirna Hovius (Strategy, Communication & Innovation Manager), Jos Sweers (Finance, Support and Control Manager a.i.) and Sandra Liefhebber (Strategic HR Manager).
In the 1980s and 1990s, Hivos was one of the first major Dutch NGOs that opened offices in the Global South to operate in the close vicinity of its civil society partners, beneficiaries and other stakeholders there. To date, most of our programs are executed through regional Hivos hubs in Southern Africa, East Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America. The MENA (Middle East & North Africa) hub is still based in The Hague for safety reasons, but we are in the process of transferring this hub to Lebanon. We have country offices in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Lebanon, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, and Timor Leste. All these offices report to their respective regional hub.
Distribution and make-up of staff
Currently one third of Hivos staff works at the global office in The Hague, while two-thirds work at regional and country offices. Staff in the regions are mainly non-Dutch and also hold management positions in the regional offices, including those of Regional Director.
